An hour and half away from Lisbon, near the Spanish border, in the shade of the fortified, hilltop town of Monsarez you will find the magical São Lourenço do Barrocal. A property that has been in the same family for 200 years. The mantle has now passed to eighth-generation owner José Antonio, who spent 14 years refurbishing the entire property, breathing new life into a landscape with an old-world soul.

You feel welcome the moment you enter the hotel. The vibe is familiar, warm and welcoming. The staff are extremely sweet and helpful, and nothing is too much trouble.

The 780-hectare estate offers you meadows, trails, vineyards and a winery, centuries-old olive groves, stables, an orchard, and walled gardens. You can enjoy everything from horse riding, organic dinners, wine tastings to stargazing and bicycle rides. The hotel has a fitness studio, farm shop, pool and pool bar, restaurant, bar, concierge and laundry services.

The rooms and cottages have WiFi, TV, air-conditioning, a minibar, Nespresso coffee machine, tea-making facilities, free bottled water, a digital safe, Susanne Kaufmann bath products and amazing views. A few rooms have their own kitchen. Here is all you can imagine but you will need a few days to explore and enjoy it all.

Where to go: Where to start. The São Lourenço do Barrocal estate has 7.8 million square metres land to explore. On your walks you will meet cows, horses, donkeys, and spot various species of birds. You will pass olive groves, vegetable gardens and vineyards, and be surrounded by spectacular forests, fields, trails to explore. The landscape is so extraordinary, and you will immediately sink into a meditative state of mind the moment you arrive. Take one of their Portuguese classic bicycles or a mountain bike and pedal your way into the estate. After a long morning, afternoon or evening walk or ride we guarantee that dogs and humans are filled with good vibes only… and hunger.

Allowed areas: Dogs are not allowed in the pool area, indoor restaurant/bar as well as the spa and the boutique. First this felt a bit restrictive, but we quickly discovered how quickly you feel like home in the hotel. Both humans and dogs. We were perfectly comfortable with our dog staying in the room (The Barn Cottage) while we had a fantastic dinner in the restaurant just 1minute walk away – and the best thing - she was so relaxed and happy when we came back.

Size n’ shape: At São Lourenço do Barrocal dogs up to 15kg are welcome. Exceptions can be made.

Room amenities: This magnificent place welcomes you with a bed, bowls, and a treat for your dog. This is ready and prepared in your room upon arrival.

Accommodation fee: The rate for having your dog with you is 75€ for every 3 nights. After the 3rd night you will be charged 75€ again. The fee covers additional and specific cleaning to ensure that the next guests staying in the room or villa will have the same amazing experience as you.

Dog loving or friendly. Absolutely dog-lovers.

Other: At São Lourenço do Barrocal they happily accommodate up to 2 dogs per room. We can’t help being a little extra excited about this place. Off course, always keep your dog on a leash inside the hotel premises.

If you ask us: Make sure your dog is trained, well behaved, calm and travel-savvy when bring him/her to a hotel stay. For the stress-free experience.

Last tip: To avoid unpleasant surprises for both your dog and the hotel staff, always use the “Do not disturb” sign when leaving your dog alone in the room, even for 5 minutes.
